5661Buy or download items from the iTunes Store

Buy or download an item

  1. To go to the store, click iTunes Store near the top center of the iTunes window.

iTunes Store selected in the iTunes navigation bar
  2. When you find the item you want, click the button to download it (depending on the item, the button might say Buy, Free, Subscribe, a specific price, or something else).

    A button displaying a price

To preview an item before purchasing, move the pointer over the item and click the Preview button Play icon inside a circle.

Choose the format for movies and TV shows

Some movies and TV shows are available in HD (high definition) format. Of these, some are available in both 1080p and 720p formats. You can choose which format you prefer to download—for example, you might choose 720p if you have limited space or you want items to download faster.

If you want to watch HD movies and TV shows on a computer display doesn’t support HD, you can set iTunes to play them in standard definition.

  • Choose which format is downloaded to your iTunes library: Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Store, then click the “When downloading High Definition videos, prefer” pop-up menu and choose an option.

  • Watch HD movies and TV shows on your computer in standard definition: Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Playback, then click the Preferred Video Version menu and choose Standard Definition.

TV shows

You can buy individual episodes or entire seasons (buying an entire season at once can cost less). If you buy an entire season, you have these options (not all are available for all shows or in all countries):

  • Season Pass: For a season in progress. All available episodes are downloaded to your iTunes library; new episodes are downloaded when they become available.

Important: When new episodes become available, you’re notified via email. To download a new episode, click the link in the email. If you buy a season pass and then buy an individual episode, you’re charged again for the episode.

  • Buy All Episodes: For a season in progress. Purchases all available episodes for the current season, but not new episodes.

  • Multi-Pass: For shows that don’t have traditional “seasons” (for example, news programs). The latest episode is downloaded; each remaining episode is downloaded when it becomes available.

  • Buy Season: For a completed season. Purchases and downloads all episodes.

Many shows are available for download and purchase the day after they air; some shows may not be available for a few days.

Audiobooks

You can listen to audiobooks on your computer or your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad.

Many audiobooks provide a sample you can listen to before you buy the book. Samples are downloaded only to your device.

Spoken program files purchased from the iTunes Store end in “.m4b.”

Mobile apps and games

The App Store is a section of the iTunes Store. You can download apps to your computer and sync them to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad.

You can use apps and play the games only on your device, not on your computer. Some apps might not work on all devices.

Rent movies from the iTunes Store

You can rent and play movies from the iTunes Store on your computer, iPod, iPhone, or iPad. If you have an Apple TV, you can use it to rent items and play them on your home theater system.

A rented item expires 30 days after you rent it or 24 hours after you begin playing it, whichever comes first. Expired rentals are deleted automatically.

Note: If you plan to watch a rental using Apple TV, you’ll get the best-quality video by renting it using your Apple TV. HD movies rented using Apple TV can’t be transferred to another computer or device. For more information, see the documentation for your Apple TV.

Rent items from the iTunes Store using your computer

  • When you find a movie you want to rent, click Rent Movie (if you don’t see this button, the item isn’t available for rent).

Transfer rentals from your iTunes library to your iOS device or Apple TV

You can transfer rented movies from your computer to your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, if your device can play the rented item. If you have iPhone 3GS (or earlier) or iPod touch (third generation or earlier), you can also transfer rentals from your device to your computer.

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

  2. Click the device button, then click Movies.

You can also create podcast stations with the podcasts you subscribe to—for example, you could group all podcasts about personal finance into a station. You can have the podcasts in your station play in any order you choose, and the stations are automatically updated when new episodes become available.

Purchase tagged radio songs

iTunes Tagging lets you “tag” songs you hear on the radio, then preview and purchase them later on the iTunes Store. iTunes Tagging is available only on iPod nano (5th generation) and on some third-party FM radios.

If you have an iPod nano, your tagged songs are added to iTunes when you sync your device (see instructions below). To add tagged songs to iTunes from a third-party radio, you first need to sync them from your radio to your iPod. For more information, see the documentation that came with your radio.

To learn how to tag songs, see the documentation for your radio or device.

  1. Connect your device to your computer and click the device button near the top left of the iTunes window.

Download previous purchases from the iTunes Store

If you’ve purchased items from the iTunes Store, you can download most of them to your devices andauthorized computers (up to 10 total). This is a great way to add items to your devices without having tosync or copy files, and lets you replace iTunes files you accidentally lose or delete.

You can also check for purchases that haven’t been downloaded to your computer, or have iTunes check for them automatically. This is useful, for example, if a download is interrupted.

To find out how to download previous purchases to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad, see the documentation for your device.

Download previous iTunes Store purchases to an authorized computer

  1. Click your name to the left of the Search field and choose Purchased. If you don’t see your name, click Sign In.

Note: Some types of previously purchased content might not be available in some countries. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer on the iTunes Store.

Manage your iTunes Store account

To buy items in the iTunes Store, you need one of the following:

  • An Apple ID. If you’ve purchased items from the Apple Online Store, bought an iPhoto book, or have an iCloud account, then you have an Apple ID. If you don’t have one, you can set one up using iTunes.

  • An AOL account.

Note: AOL accounts can’t be used in some countries. Check with your country’s iTunes Store for more information.

Set up a new Apple ID

  • Choose Store > Create Apple ID, and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you have a PayPal account, you can use that as your payment method when you enter your credit card information. (PayPal isn’t accepted for payment in some countries.)

When you finish using the store, you can sign out to prevent anyone else who has access to your computer from making purchases using your account.

Do one of the following:

  • Choose Store > Sign In (or Sign Out).

  • Click Sign In near the top right of the iTunes window (or click your name and choose Sign Out).

  2. Click Edit.

  3. Make your changes, and click Done.

Your changes take effect immediately, and apply to all apps in which you use your Apple ID.

If you have an AOL account, changes you make in iTunes don’t affect your AOL account on the AOL service. For example, if you change your password in iTunes, the password you use to log in to the AOL service doesn’t change.

View your purchase history

Items you purchase from the iTunes Store are added to the Purchased playlist in iTunes. However, because you can add items to or remove items from this list, it might not be accurate. You can see a list of all your iTunes Store purchases.

  1. Choose Store > View Account, and sign in.

  2. In the Account Information window, click See All (below Purchase History).

The purchase history shows purchases made using this account, with your most recent purchases shown first.

  3. To view details of previous purchases, click the arrow to the left of the order date.

If your purchase history seems incomplete, make sure you’ve clicked the arrow next to each previous purchase to see all your purchase history information.

If your purchase history seems to be incorrect, or you believe you’ve been charged for an item you didn’t buy, visit the iTunes Store Support website.

If you delete the Purchased playlist, iTunes creates a new one when you buy an item from the iTunes Store.

Share iTunes Store purchases with Family Sharing

With Family Sharing, up to six family members can download each other’s iTunes Store purchases to their own computers and devices. Family members can also hide their purchases so others can’t download them.

To use Family Sharing, one adult family member (the organizer), sets up the family and agrees to pay for all purchases. To control spending by kids, the organizer can require approval for any purchases or free downloads requested by non-adult family members.

Family Sharing requires iCloud and OS X Yosemite v10.10 or later. Each family member needs a separate Apple ID.

Set up Family Sharing

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.

  2. Click Set Up Family, then follow the onscreen instructions.

  1. Click your name to the left of the Search field and choose Purchased. If you don’t see your name, click Sign In.

When the family member tries to make a purchase or requests a download, a notification is sent to the organizer, who can approve or decline the request.

Family Sharing is designed to be used by a single family (adults and children). You can be part of only one family group at a time, and may switch to a different family group only twice per year. Features may vary based on country.

Authorize a computer to play iTunes Store purchases

To play many purchases from the iTunes Store, you must authorize your computer using your Apple IDand password. (Authorization helps protect the copyrights of the purchased items.)

You can authorize up to five computers (Mac, Windows, or both) at a time. To play a purchased item on a sixth computer, you need to deauthorize another one. An iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV doesn’t count as a computer.

You can also authorize up to three computers to play items purchased from the Audible website (audible.com). Audible is a third-party company that sells audiobooks and other spoken programs.

You can authorize or deauthorize a computer at any time. Be sure to deauthorize a computer before you sell it or give it away.

Authorize or deauthorize a computer

Do any of the following:

  • Authorize a computer to play iTunes Store purchases: Choose Store > Authorize This Computer.

  • Deauthorize a computer: Choose Store > Deauthorize This Computer.

  • Deauthorize a computer to play spoken programs purchased from the Audible website: Choose Store > Deauthorize Audible Account.

  • If you forgot to deauthorize a computer you no longer own, and you have five authorized computers:You can deauthorize all your authorized computers at once. You can use this method once a year.

Sign in to the iTunes Store, choose Store > View Account, and click Deauthorize All. If you don’t see this option, it’s because you have fewer than five authorized computers.

Usage rights for iTunes Store purchases

Movies, TV shows, and certain other items purchased from the iTunes Store are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM). These protected purchases can be:

  • Played on up to five authorized computers

  • Synced with your iPod, iPhone, or iPad

  • Synced with or streamed to your Apple TV

All songs offered by the iTunes Store now come without DRM protection. These DRM-free songs, callediTunes Plus, have no usage restrictions and feature high-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding.

If you have older iTunes Store purchases that are now available as iTunes Plus downloads, you may upgrade your existing purchases. To do so, visit the iTunes Store and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you have trouble using the iTunes Store

If you’re unable to browse, sign in to, or buy music from the iTunes Store

Try the following:

  • If you see a message that your computer can’t connect to the iTunes Store, click another item (Podcasts, for example) and click iTunes Store again. If it still doesn’t connect, make sure your Internet connection is working—open a web browser and visit a website. If your Internet connection is OK, there may be a problem with the iTunes Store. Try visiting the store again later.

  • Make sure your computer’s date, time, and time zone are set correctly in Date & Time preferences. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and click Date & Time.

  • Make sure your account information is accurate and that you don’t need to correct a problem with a previous purchase. Enter the iTunes Store, click your account name at the top of the iTunes Store window, and sign in to your account. To verify your account information, click Edit Account Info and Edit Payment Information.

  • If you’re having trouble signing in to the store using your AOL account, your AOL account might not work with the iTunes Store in your country. Only U.S. and U.K. customers can sign in using their AOL accounts.

  • Make sure the iTunes Store is available in your country. For more information, visit the iTunes website.

  • If you can’t find the song or album you’re looking for, it may not be available for sale. Visit theRequest Music webpage, and then visit the iTunes Store at a later date to see if the song or album is available.

Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

To add items on your computer to your iPod, iPhone, or iPad, you sync them using iTunes. You can have iTunes sync items automatically (which is the quickest option), or drag items to your device manually (which gives you more control)—or you can do both. You can also remove items from your device automatically or manually.

For more information about syncing, see Syncing overview.

Select items to sync automatically

  1. Connect your device to your computer and click the device button near the top left of the iTunes window.

The device button selected near the top of the iTunes window.
  2. Select the type of content you want to sync (for example, Music or Apps) in the sidebar on the left.

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each type of content you want to include on your device.

The bar at the bottom of the window shows how much space will remain on your device after you sync.

Move the pointer over the bar to view details about the content you're syncing, and see how much space is left for more content
  5. By default, iTunes syncs your device whenever you connect it to your computer. If you want to have iTunes ask you before syncing, do one of the following:

    • Require a prompt before syncing this device: Click Summary, then deselect “Open iTunes when this [device] is connected.”

    • Require a prompt before syncing all devices: Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Devices, and select “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.”

  6. When you’re ready to sync, click Apply.

Tip: To automatically sync a connected device at any time, choose File > Devices > Sync [device name].

WARNING: If you delete an automatically synced item from your iTunes library, the deleted item is removed from your device the next time you sync.

Add items to your device manually

You can manually add music, movies, TV shows, apps, podcasts, and iTunes U lessons to your device. You can’t manually add photos, books, contacts, or other info.

  1. Make sure your device is connected.

  2. From anywhere in your iTunes library, begin dragging the items you want to add.

A pane with a list of connected devices appears on the left.

  3. Drag the items to your device in the list until a blue border appears.

The items are added to your device.

Keep items from being automatically synced

If there are some items you never want synced (for example, if they’re too big to fit on your device), you can keep them from being synced.

You can also turn off automatic syncing for music, movies, and TV shows. You must do this if you want to sync iPod classic, iPod nano, or iPod shuffle with more than one iTunes library, or automatically fill your device with songs using Autofill (see the next task, below).

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

  2. Click the device button, then click Summary.

  3. Do any of the following:

    • Keep individual items from being synced: Select “Sync only checked [items].” Then, deselect the checkbox next to any items in your iTunes library that you don’t want synced.

    • Turn off automatic syncing for music, movies, and TV shows: Select “Manually manage music and videos.”

  4. Click Apply.

WARNING: If you turn off automatic syncing on your device, adding books for the iBooks app on your device erases all your other content. You should add books to your device only when automatic syncing is on.

Fill your device with a random selection of songs using Autofill

If you don’t want to always hear the same music on your device, you can have iTunes fill it with a random selection of songs by using Autofill.

To use Autofill, you must turn off automatic syncing for music and videos (see instructions above).

  1. Connect your device to your computer and click the device button near the top left of the iTunes window.

The device button selected near the top of the iTunes window.
  2. Click On My Device.

  6. When you’re done, click OK.

  7. Click Autofill, then click Sync.

Each time you use Autofill, iTunes adds different songs to your device.

Remove items from your device

Make sure your device is connected, then do one of the following:

  • Remove an item that was synced automatically: Do any of the following, then sync your device:

    • Deselect the checkbox for the item in your iTunes library, and select “Sync only checked [items]” in the Summary pane.

    • If the item was added because it’s part of a synced playlist, remove the item from the playlist.

    • Change your sync settings to keep the item from being synced.

  • Remove an item that was added manually or using Autofill: Click On My Device, select an item (or items), press the Delete key, and click Delete.

The types of content you can sync depends on your device. For more information, see the documentation for your device.

You can sync multiple devices with your iTunes library, and use different settings for each device.

Important: Before disconnecting iPod classic, iPod nano, or iPod shuffle from your computer, click the Eject button The eject button.

Sync your device over a Wi-Fi network

If you’re on a Wi-Fi network, and have iOS 5 (or later) installed on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad, you can sync your device (add items to it from your computer) without connecting it to your computer (if your computer and device are connected to the same network).

When you sync automatically over Wi-Fi, your device uses the same sync settings you chose for syncing using a cable.

Turn on Wi-Fi syncing

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

  2. Click the device button, then click Summary.

A picture of the device button with Summary selected in the sidebar
  3. Select the checkbox for “Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi.”

  4. Click Apply.

When you disconnect your device from your computer, the icon for your device still appears in iTunes unless you click the Eject button Eject icon.

If you click Eject, the icon for your device is removed, but Wi-Fi syncing remains turned on. The icon for your device reappears the next time you open iTunes (if your computer and device are connected to the same WI-Fi network).

Sync your device over Wi-Fi

Here are ways to sync wirelessly when your device is on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer (the computer must be turned on):

  • Connect your device to a charger and plug it in to an electrical outlet. Syncing begins automatically.

  • In iTunes, click the icon for your device, and click the Sync button.

  • On your device, choose Settings > General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, and tap Sync Now. You can use your device while it’s syncing over Wi-Fi.

Note: To restore your device’s iOS software and revert it to its factory settings, you must connect the device to your computer.

You can sync a device wirelessly with multiple computers, but each type of content can be synced with only one computer.

Syncing over Wi-Fi is slower than syncing over a cable. If you connect a device to your computer while the device is syncing over Wi-Fi, syncing continues over the cable. If you disconnect the device’s cable from the computer while syncing, syncing stops, even if Wi-Fi syncing is on.

Sync and organize iOS apps

In addition to downloading apps directly to your iOS device from the App Store, you can download the apps to your computer and use iTunes to sync them to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad.

If you have an iPod touch or iPhone with iOS 4 or later, or an iPad with iOS 4.2 or later, you can organize your apps by creating folders in iTunes or on your device. The folders are synced when you sync your device with your computer.

Sync downloaded apps to iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad

  1. Connect your device to your computer.

  2. Click the device button, then click Apps.

A new folder is created, containing both apps. If you want, type a name for the folder.

  4. Do any of the following:

    • Add apps to a folder: Drag them to the folder.

    • Open a folder: Double-click it.

    • Close a folder: Click outside of the folder.

    • Remove an app from a folder: Open the folder, and then drag the app to any Home screen.

    • Rearrange the apps in a folder: Drag the apps to where you want them to appear.

    • Change a folder’s name: Open the folder you want to rename, double-click the folder’s name, and type in a new name.

You can’t put a folder inside another folder.

You can use the apps you download from the App Store only on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad (not on your computer). Some apps might not work on all devices.

If you’re connected to a 3G, 4G, LTE, or Wi-Fi network, you can also buy apps directly from your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. For more information, see the documentation that came with your device.
